The Subtle Deception–Christians and the World

I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.  (John 17:14-18)

These are the words of our Lord.  He knew how powerful attraction the world would be for Christians, but he did not call us to leave the world and retire in isolation.  However, the subtle deception to become like the world is real!  And a good description of what has been happening can be found in the book Ashamed of the Gospel by pastor John McArthur.  Although I’m not a total fan of his teachings, I think in this book he gets the biblical idea of what a church that calls itself Christian is and should be, for the glory of God: Continue reading →
